Ponta Delgada weather by month

March is slightly warmer than February at Ponta Delgada, with more rain; April is warmer and drier.

Bars run from the average daily low to the average daily high. Dots and the figure below: monthly rainfall.

How warm is it in the Azores in March?

March brings mild days and cool evenings to these stations. Ponta Delgada's average high rises just 0.5 °C from February. It remains 8.1 °C below August's. Nights stay near 12 °C. I’d pack a warm layer for evenings.

The seven stations' average highs differ by only 1.6 °C. Rainfall gives you a clearer distinction between islands. These normals describe a whole month. They cannot identify a warmer week at the end of March. Choose your outdoor days using the local forecast.

How much does it rain in March?

Ponta Delgada gets nearly four times July's rainfall in March. Rainfall rises from February, then falls in April. The station averages 11.7 days with at least 1 mm. That includes 2.9 days with at least 10 mm.

Flores follows a different pattern. Its rainfall falls from February through April. A rain day measures the daily total. It does not mean rain from morning to night. Check the local forecast before choosing a walk.

Which islands are driest in March?

Santa Maria Airport has the lowest March rainfall among these seven stations. Santa Cruz da Graciosa comes next. Flores Airport has the highest total. Its rainfall is more than twice Santa Maria's.

I’d start with Santa Maria if avoiding rain drives your choice. These records describe individual stations. Their reference periods differ. They do not measure every part of an island. Higher ground gets more rain. Keep a wet weather plan wherever you stay.

Can you swim in the Azores in March?

You can swim in March, though the sea is cold. Sea surface temperatures averaged 16 °C across the Azores in March 2026. At Terra Nostra in Furnas, thermal water is 38 to 42 °C. Day visitors can use the pools from 10:30 to 16:30. Last entry is 16:00.

The bathing boat to Vila Franca Islet does not run in March. I’d choose a thermal pool for your bathing day.

What can you do in the Azores in March?

March suits whale watching and short walks with flexible dates. Blue and fin whales pass through during the March to June migration season. Futurismo runs whale watching from Ponta Delgada all year. Unsafe weather cancels departures. I’d book early in the stay. Leave another date free.

Check trail status before choosing a walk. We refresh the regional alerts twice a day. Read the local forecast too. I’d choose a route you can finish before sunset. Allow time for stops along the way.

What to pack for the Azores in March

Pack a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip. Add a warm layer for evenings. Wear layers you can adjust while walking. I’d keep spare socks dry inside your bag. Bring sunscreen for walks, including cloudy days. Take a jacket on the whale boat too.

Take a dark swimsuit for Terra Nostra. Iron in the water can stain pale fabric. Rinse your swimsuit before it dries. Pack a towel and dry clothes for afterwards.

Azores March travel questions

Is March a good time to visit the Azores?

Yes, for walks and thermal baths with flexible plans. I’d choose São Miguel for Furnas and boats from Ponta Delgada. March also begins the spring whale migration season. April has higher average highs and less rain at all seven stations.

Is it windy in the Azores in March?

Yes. Wind is a regular feature of the Azores. Winter winds are stronger than summer winds on average. Check IPMA's wind and sea warnings before boat trips. I’d leave a spare departure date and check the forecast before walking.

How many hours of daylight are there in March?

Ponta Delgada has about 11 hours 22 minutes of daylight on 1 March and 12 hours 35 minutes on 31 March 2026. On 31 March, sunrise is 07:29 and sunset is 20:04, local time. Daylight measures the time between sunrise and sunset. Cloudy hours count too.

Is March high season in the Azores?

No. March is outside the main summer high season. Whale watching still runs from Ponta Delgada. I’d book it early in your stay. That leaves room to change dates after a weather cancellation. Check each activity's season before booking.
