About this site

nineazores is an independent guide to the nine Azores islands. Roman Antonov writes and edits it. Here is how I check facts and choose places and tours.

Who keeps it

I’m Roman Antonov. I live in Portugal and love these islands. I choose the places and tours. I write the guides and check their sources. I also keep the data behind the site. Operators and tourism boards do not write these pages.

Weather readings show their observation time. Trail status shows when we checked it. Collection and tour pages date the listing checks. Visiting blocks give a source and date for hours and tickets.

Where the numbers come from

We read IPMA weather observations every 30 minutes. The site uses twenty-eight stations across the nine islands. IPMA also provides forecasts for nine towns. Monthly averages use IPMA climate normals. Island pages name the station and period.

We read the regional trail network’s alerts twice a day. Press “Check the status now” to check again. Length, grade and walking time come from the network’s register. Elevation profiles use a digital elevation model. Maps use OpenStreetMap.

Tours: the operators’ listings on partner sites such as Viator. I check prices, ratings and review counts when I reread a collection. We publish these figures when we update the site. Collection and tour pages show when I last checked their listings.

I check opening hours, tickets and booking rules on official pages. Visiting blocks show the source and date. Driving times use OpenStreetMap roads between named points.

Island geography comes from Wikipedia and the regional trail network. Population figures come from census results. Airports and routes come from the airlines. Ferry details come from Atlânticoline.

How I choose tours

I read the Azores listings on partner sites. I keep the trips I would book myself. Each needs a clear itinerary and meeting point. The operator must be named. There must be enough reviews to support the rating. I check cancellation and refund terms. I combine near-duplicates from the same operator and compare prices.

I put the trip I would book first. Then come alternatives and other trips worth considering. Each entry shows the adult price and group size. It also covers inclusions and cancellation. You can compare the choices yourself.

Booking links take you to the partner’s own price. The partner pays this site a small share. That payment does not affect my choices or their order. The affiliate disclosure gives the details.

I reread the listings whenever I update a collection. We then publish its prices, ratings and review counts. A trip that stops being sold is removed.

How I choose places and trails

I choose places I would recommend for a first visit. Each guide must help you visit on your own. It covers directions and practical details, including any walk.

I use the regional network’s marked routes. Each walk must reach a place in this guide. I need an official description and an elevation profile. I also need the nearest weather station and the route’s track.

Corrections

Islands change, trails close and prices move. If you find something wrong, tell me which page and what is wrong, and I will fix it or take it down. The contact page says how.
