Choose Madeira for levada walks and warmer winter days. Choose the Azores for crater lakes and thermal baths on São Miguel, or a trip across several islands.

Is Madeira part of the Azores?

Madeira and the Azores are separate archipelagos. Both are autonomous regions of Portugal. They lie in the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira lies southwest of Lisbon. The Azores lie farther west. They sit between Europe and North America.

Madeira has two inhabited islands. These are Madeira and Porto Santo. Desertas and Selvagens are uninhabited island groups. The Azores have nine islands. They form three geographical groups. See where the Azores are before choosing your arrival island.

Is Madeira warmer than the Azores?

Yes, Funchal is warmer than Ponta Delgada. Its average daily highs are higher throughout the year. Funchal’s January average high is 20.0°C. Ponta Delgada’s is 17.5°C. August is closer: 26.8°C against 26.0°C.

These IPMA figures are climate averages for the two cities. Funchal’s August rainfall averages 1.3 mm. Ponta Delgada’s averages 45.8 mm. These stations describe coastal cities. Check a separate forecast for mountain walks.

I’d choose Madeira for winter warmth. In summer, I’d prioritise the walks. Check our Azores weather guide before fixing your outdoor plans.

Landscape and scenery: Madeira vs the Azores

Choose Madeira for ridges and forest walks. I’d choose São Miguel for crater lakes and thermal bathing. Pico Ruivo reaches 1,862 m. It is Madeira’s highest peak. The Levada das 25 Fontes walk overlooks the Ribeira da Janela valley. You look across the Laurissilva forest.

On São Miguel, Sete Cidades has lakes inside a volcanic crater. Furnas has thermal bathing at Terra Nostra Park. The Azores also have higher ground. Mount Pico reaches 2,351 m. It is Portugal’s highest point. Choose the island around the landscape you want to see.

Hiking: levadas or crater lakes?

I’d choose Madeira for walks beside levadas, its irrigation channels. Choose São Miguel for routes along crater rims. PR6, Levada das 25 Fontes, is 8.6 km there and back. Allow 3 hours. PR04SMI, Mata do Canário to Sete Cidades, is 11.7 km one way. Allow 3 hours. Arrange transport from the finish.

Madeira’s classified trails managed by IFCN require advance booking through SIMplifica. Book your entry time before travelling. Visitors older than 12 years pay €4.50 for PR6.

Check official trail alerts before walking. Compare our Azores trails with the Madeira levadas and mountain walks on our sister site. I’d check each walk’s climb and descent as well as its length.

Getting there and getting around

For a first visit, I’d compare flights to Funchal and Ponta Delgada. Funchal’s airport serves Madeira. Ponta Delgada’s airport serves São Miguel. Flights from Lisbon take about 1 hour 30 minutes to Madeira. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel.

I’d hire a car on either island. Use it for walks and viewpoints. The Azores span about 600 km. If you add Azores islands, book regional flights or selected ferry routes. Atlânticoline connects Faial with Pico and São Jorge. A stay on São Miguel needs no island transfers.

Compare our Azores flight options before booking rooms. Use the island groups below to choose where to go. Check connections for your travel dates.

Can you visit Madeira and the Azores on one trip?

Yes, flights between the archipelagos let you combine them. Azores Airlines connects Funchal with Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. SATA also links Funchal and Terceira. Check flight days before booking accommodation.

I’d allow a fortnight for Madeira plus one Azores island. Pair Madeira’s levadas with São Miguel’s crater lakes and thermal baths. Leave room in your plans for the journey between them. With 7 days, I’d choose one island. Use our sister site islandmadeira.com for the Madeira half of your trip.

Madeira and Azores travel questions

Can you swim in the sea in the Azores and Madeira?

Yes, both have bathing areas with direct access to seawater. Madeira has the natural pools at Porto Moniz. São Miguel has bathing areas at Lagoa and Caloura. Choose a supervised bathing area and follow the local flags. Check sea conditions before you swim.

Which is cheaper, Madeira or the Azores?

Neither is automatically cheaper. I’d compare flights and rooms for the same dates. Staying on São Miguel avoids extra island transfers. Include activity fees: Madeira’s PR6 costs €4.50 for visitors older than 12 years. Terra Nostra Park charges admission for its garden and thermal bathing.

Which is better for a first trip?

I’d choose Madeira for a first trip built around walking and winter warmth. Choose São Miguel if crater lakes and thermal baths lead your list. Either works as a stay on one island. You can visit São Miguel without adding flights or ferries to other Azores islands.

Is there a ferry between Madeira and the Azores?

No scheduled passenger ferry links Madeira and the Azores. Porto Santo Line connects Madeira with Porto Santo. Atlânticoline connects selected Azores islands. For a trip covering both archipelagos, book a flight between them.
