The Azores month by month

Typical daily high and low, sea temperature and rainfall, averaged over the year on São Miguel.

Mild all year, warm and driest in summer, cool and wet in winter but rarely cold. June to September are the best months to visit — warmest, sunniest and driest, with the sea at its warmest.

How the weather works here

Four things that explain most surprises.

Four seasons in a day

The islands sit in the open Atlantic, so fronts pass through fast. Sun, cloud, a shower and sun again inside an afternoon is normal. Plan the day, not the week.

Coast and uplands

Coastal towns stay mild. The crater rims and high ground are several degrees cooler, windier, and often sit in cloud while the coast is clear. The station range on each island above shows the gap right now.

North side, south side

Weather often differs across one island. If the north coast is wet, the south coast is frequently dry, and the other way round. Driving twenty minutes can change your day.

Why it is mild all year

The Gulf Stream keeps the sea between 17 °C and 24 °C, so winters are cool rather than cold and summers warm rather than hot. The best months are June to September.

What to pack for the Azores

The weather turns within the hour, and the uplands run several degrees cooler than the coast — so pack for all of it, whatever the forecast.

A warm layer
the uplands and the sea breeze stay cool, even in summer
A light waterproof
showers blow through fast, then clear
Shoes with grip
trails and viewpoints turn muddy
Sun protection
the sun is strong when it breaks through
Swimwear
for hot springs, sea pools and summer beaches
A dry bag
to keep a phone and camera dry on the boat
