How warm is it in the Azores in August?
August has the warmest days and nights at all seven stations. Ponta Delgada’s average high rises 1.3 °C from July. It averages almost 24 days reaching 25 °C or more. Overnight lows stay at 20 °C or above on roughly half its nights.
I’d wear light clothes for days near the coast. Higher ground is cooler. Take a layer for walks at altitude. I’d start longer walks early.

How much does it rain in August?
August is drier than September, though rain increases from July. Ponta Delgada averages 6.5 days with at least 1 mm of rain. About one of those days has at least 10 mm. Its monthly rainfall is less than a third of December’s.
A rain day records a daily total. It does not mean rain throughout the day. Rainfall increases with altitude. I’d keep the order of outdoor plans flexible. Check the forecast before setting out.

Which islands are driest in August?
Santa Maria has the driest August station in this comparison. Terceira’s Angra station comes next. Flores Airport records the most rain. Its total is almost twice Santa Maria Airport’s.
These records cover different periods. They describe individual stations. They do not rank every slope on each island. I’d favour Santa Maria if lower rainfall matters most. Keep a wet weather plan whichever island you choose.
Can you swim in the Azores in August?
Yes, August suits swimming at beaches and coastal bathing areas. Summer sea temperatures average around 22 °C. Choose a beach with lifeguards. Follow their advice and the beach flags.
The bathing boat to Vila Franca Islet runs in August. Its 2026 season was 12 June to 11 October. Visitor numbers are capped each day. I’d arrange this trip early in your stay.

What can you do in the Azores in August?
August suits whale watching and walks between swims. Sperm whales are present throughout the year. They are more abundant in summer. Whale watching boats run from Ponta Delgada in every season.
Start with the trail status page before choosing a walk. We refresh its regional alerts twice a day. Check the forecast too. Choose a route that suits your fitness.
For Lagoa do Fogo, check summer shuttle access before driving up. I’d plan the lake visit for a clear forecast.

What to pack for the Azores in August
Pack light summer clothes and a waterproof jacket. Add walking shoes with good grip. I’d take a light layer for boat trips. Bring a swimsuit and towel for the sea. Keep dry clothes in your day bag.
Take a hat and sunscreen on walks. Use sun protection even under cloud. Carry enough drinking water for the full route. Check the forecast before choosing your layers.
