How warm is it in the Azores in February?
February brings cool days at these seven stations. Average night lows sit around 11 to 12 °C. Ponta Delgada has its lowest average high of the year. That is 8.6 °C below August's. The seven stations' average highs differ by just 1.6 °C.
January and March are only slightly warmer in Ponta Delgada. Moving your trip a few weeks changes little on temperature alone. I’d bring warm clothes for evenings. Give more weight to rainfall and the activities you want.
How much does it rain in February?
February has over three times July's rainfall in Ponta Delgada. January and March are both wetter there. Ponta Delgada averages 10.8 days with at least 1 mm. That includes 2.7 days with 10 mm or more.
A rain day counts the daily rainfall total. These figures give no measure of how long rain lasts. I’d keep the order of outdoor plans flexible. Check the local forecast before choosing the day's walk.
Which islands are driest in February?
Santa Maria Airport has the lowest February rainfall among these seven stations. Ponta Delgada and Santa Cruz da Graciosa come next. Flores Airport has the highest total. It receives more than twice Santa Maria Airport's February rainfall.
These stations use different reference periods. Each figure describes one location on its island. I’d pick Santa Maria for its lower rainfall average. Make room for wet days on any island.
Can you swim in the Azores in February?
Yes. I’d choose thermal pools for a February swim. Sea temperatures average around 16 °C in winter. That figure covers the season across the archipelago. Check sea conditions before entering the water.
Terra Nostra in Furnas has thermal water at 38 to 42 °C. The park opens at 10:30 and closes at 16:30. Last entry is 16:00. Bring a swimsuit for the pool.
The bathing boat to Vila Franca Islet does not run in February. Its 2026 season ended on 11 October.

What can you do in the Azores in February?
February works for short walks and winter whale watching. Choose a walk using our trail status page. We refresh the regional alerts twice a day. Check the forecast before setting out.
Futurismo runs whale watching from Ponta Delgada throughout the year. Unsafe weather cancels departures. I’d book early in your stay. Keep another day free for a second date.
On Terceira, Carnival's bailinhos bring theatre and music to local halls. Carnival dates change each year. Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027. Check the event programme before fixing your dates.

What to pack for the Azores in February
Pack a waterproof jacket with a hood. Add walking shoes that grip wet ground. Bring layers for cool mornings and evenings. I’d put spare socks in a waterproof bag.
Take a dark swimsuit for Terra Nostra. The thermal water's iron can mark light fabrics. Wash your swimsuit before it dries. Add a towel and dry clothes for after the bath.

Azores February travel questions
Is February a good time to visit the Azores?
Yes, if you want thermal baths and walks between wet spells. I’d choose São Miguel for Furnas and winter boat trips. February has Ponta Delgada's lowest average high. Plan for cool evenings and leave room to move outdoor activities.
Is it windy in the Azores in February?
Yes. Winds are stronger in winter than summer on average. I’d pack a jacket that blocks wind. Check the wind and sea forecast before boat trips. Let the day's conditions decide which outdoor plans you keep.
How many hours of daylight are there in February?
Ponta Delgada gets about 10 hours 20 minutes at February's start, rising to 11 hours 20 minutes by its end. That adds roughly an hour for outdoor plans. Daylight includes cloudy hours. I’d finish walks before sunset.
Is February high season in the Azores?
No. February sits outside the summer peak. Provisional figures record 157,219 overnight stays in February 2026. August's preliminary total is 695,328. Both figures cover tourist accommodation. February's total is less than a quarter of August's. I’d still book boat trips early in your stay. That leaves time to move a cancelled trip.

I compared the IPMA station normals and checked winter activities with the operators. I also checked daylight times and Carnival dates.
