Ponta Delgada weather by month
April is warmer and drier than March at Ponta Delgada, with about three times July's rainfall.
Bars run from the average daily low to the average daily high. Dots and the figure below: monthly rainfall.
How warm is it in the Azores in April?
April brings mild days and cool nights at these seven stations. Average night lows sit close to 13 °C. Ponta Delgada's average high rises 0.9 °C from March. It remains 7.2 °C below August's.
The spread between the stations' average highs is only 1.6 °C. I'd give activities more weight. The temperature differences are small. For warmer spring days, consider May. Ponta Delgada's average high rises another 1.4 °C that month.
How much does it rain in April?
April has less rain than March at all seven stations. Ponta Delgada's monthly average falls by 18%. It is still about three times July's. Flores Airport's average falls by roughly one third from March.
Ponta Delgada averages 10.2 days with at least 1 mm of rain. That includes 2.4 days with 10 mm or more. A rain day measures the daily rainfall total. It does not mean rain from morning to night. Keep the order of outdoor plans flexible.
Which islands are driest in April?
Santa Maria Airport has the lowest April rainfall among these seven stations. Santa Cruz da Graciosa comes next. Flores Airport has the highest total. Its average is almost twice Santa Maria Airport's.
I'd consider Santa Maria if avoiding rain matters most. Ponta Delgada, Angra and Horta have very similar totals. These are records for individual stations. Their reference periods differ. They cover different sets of years. Keep a wet weather plan whichever island you choose.
Can you swim in the Azores in April?
You can swim in April, with sea temperatures averaging about 16 °C. I'd choose a thermal pool for warmth. Terra Nostra in Furnas has water at 38 to 42 °C.
Vila Franca Islet's 2026 bathing season was scheduled for 12 June to 11 October. That put April outside the season. I'd choose summer for a trip centred on sea swimming. August's sea average is about 22 °C.

What can you do in the Azores in April?
April suits whale watching and walks between wet spells. Blue whales and fin whales pass the Azores during spring migration. I'd book whale watching early in your stay. Unsafe weather cancels boat departures. Leave time to try another date.
Check trail status before choosing a walk. We refresh the regional alerts twice a day. Read the forecast too. Choose a route that suits your fitness. Follow the marked route.

What to pack for the Azores in April
Pack a waterproof jacket and walking shoes with good grip. Bring a warm layer for evenings. Take it on boat trips too. Use layers you can remove while walking. Add a hat and sunscreen for time outdoors. I'd keep spare socks dry in your bag.
Bring a dark swimsuit for Terra Nostra. Iron in the water can stain pale fabric. Rinse swimwear before it dries. I'd also pack a towel and dry clothes for afterwards.

Azores April travel questions

Yes, for whale watching and walking in mild weather. April overlaps with the spring passage of blue and fin whales. I'd choose São Miguel for boat trips from Ponta Delgada and thermal baths at Furnas. Keep boat dates flexible.
Is it windy in the Azores in April?
Yes. Pack for wind in April. Check IPMA's wind and sea warnings before a boat trip. I'd keep another date free for a cancelled departure. Bring a jacket that blocks wind.
How many hours of daylight are there in April?
Ponta Delgada has about 12 hours 37 minutes of daylight on 1 April 2026. This grows to 13 hours 44 minutes on 30 April. Sunset moves from 20:05 to 20:32 in local time. Daylight includes cloudy hours. Finish walks before sunset.

No. April is quieter than the summer peak. I'd come for spring whale watching. Mild days suit walks too. For warmer days, compare July. Ponta Delgada's average high is then almost 6 °C higher.
