Mistérios Negros trail PRC01TER
Mistérios Negros (PRC01TER) is a marked circular walk on Terceira. From Lagoa do Negro, it loops past small lakes and black volcanic domes.
The walk
The loop starts near Lagoa do Negro and Gruta do Natal. It crosses a pasture before reaching Lagoinhas do Vale Fundo. The path continues past black volcanic domes to its highest point. The return passes Pico da Cancela before following a forest road.
The path narrows through endemic vegetation after the pasture. Japanese cedar woods alternate with pastures on the descent.
What you'll see on the walk
Lagoa do Negro
The route starts near the lake and Gruta do Natal.
Lagoinhas do Vale Fundo
Only one of these three small lakes holds water all year.
Black trachytic domes
The black volcanic domes along the route have no vegetation.
Pico Gaspar
An optional detour leads to Pico Gaspar and its endemic vegetation.
Gruta do Natal
Back at the start, you can visit this 697 m lava tunnel.
Getting to the start
Start near Lagoa do Negro and Gruta do Natal. The circular walk returns here.
