Mata do Canário trail PR04SMI
Mata do Canário (PR04SMI) is a linear crater rim walk on São Miguel. It runs from near Mata do Canário to Sete Cidades village.
The walk
Follow the 11.7 km route one way towards Sete Cidades. Pass Muro das Nove Janelas and climb to Pico da Cruz. Follow the crater rim above the Blue Lake. Turn left onto Arrebentões to descend into the village.
The route uses dirt tracks and tarmac, passing trees on the early climb. The Arrebentões descent is steep and slippery. Wear walking shoes and carry drinking water.
What you'll see on the walk
Muro das Nove Janelas
This aqueduct once supplied water to Ponta Delgada.
Pico da Cruz
The first viewpoint looks over the Sete Cidades lakes.
Sete Cidades crater rim
The ridge gives views into the crater and along São Miguel’s north coast.
São Nicolau church
The walk ends beside this church in Sete Cidades village.
Getting to the start
Use “Open the start in Maps” to reach Mata do Canário. Arrange a pick-up in Sete Cidades for the return to your car.
