Dez Vulcões trail PR06FAI
Dez Vulcões (PR06FAI) is a marked linear walk on Faial. It starts at the Caldeira viewpoint and ends at the Vulcão dos Capelinhos car park.
The walk
Before setting off, cross the tunnel for a view inside Caldeira. Follow the crater rim to the turn towards Capelinhos, before Cabeço Gordo. The route descends past Cabeço dos Trinta and Cabeço do Fogo. It continues through woods and pastures to the volcanic ash at Capelinhos.
The route uses dirt tracks and forest roads through woods. It descends from Caldeira towards Capelinhos. Choose a day with good weather and clear visibility.
What you'll see on the walk
Caldeira
A tunnel at the start gives you a view inside the crater.
Cabeço dos Trinta
An optional detour follows a tunnel to Cabeço dos Trinta.
Cabeço do Fogo
The viewpoint stands in a nesting area for the Common Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus azorica).
Vulcão dos Capelinhos
Volcanic ash dominates the ground before the car park at the Interpretative Centre.
Getting to the start
Start at the Caldeira viewpoint. Arrange a pick-up from the Vulcão dos Capelinhos car park for your return.
